Job Responsibilities

Working as a traffic controller or forklift operator in Ontario you’ll be responsible for materials relocation; delivering the goods to an allocated storage area. Some industries, including warehouses, construction sites and airports, need forklift operators 24 hours a day to meet customer demand.

Typically, forklift operators are required to:

  • Load and unload goods and materials from vehicles or aircraft
  • Move pallets or crates within the work environment
  • Successfully maintain stock rotation schedule
  • Make sure all loads are secure at all times
  • Load goods and materials in appropriate loading or stacking bays
  • Maintain adequate supply levels (reporting reduced or diminishing supplies)
  • Wrap materials as necessary to ensure safe shipment
  • Verify all outbound cargo quantities and delivery receipts
  • Advocate workplace safety maintaining order in the work environment

Different Types of Forklifts

Working as a forklift operator, you could work on a variety of forklift types, including:

  • Counterbalance
  • Side loading trucks
  • Telescopic handlers
  • Hand pallet trucks
  • Reach trucks

Work Schedule

Working full time you can expect to work between 35 hours and 42 hours each week. Shift work is commonplace for forklift operators. And if you’re looking to increase your bank account, over time is frequently available.

Forklift Working Environment

Forklift operators either work inside, in a factory or warehouse environment, or outside, in port, airport or yard.

Salary Range for Forklift Operators

Salary is commensurate with experience, but you can expect to earn somewhere in the range of $15 – $20 per hour.

  • A responsible, mature attitude
  • Capability to work effectively and efficiently
  • Sound hand-eye coordination
  • The ability assesses weight, judge distances and accurately estimate heights
